We have seen a similar move from Nikon as well, when they updated the firmware of the lower-end DSLR’s, but users were still able to roll back the camera’s firmware version. Reports of incompatibility were made when Canon updated the 5D Mark III’s firmware to version 1.2.1 and 1.2.2/1.2.3. This would not be the first time Canon cut out third-party batteries. Another possibility to consider is that Canon isn’t after the feature-enhancing software, which could very likely create a workaround, and that the actual purpose of the firmware update is to prevent the use of third-party batteries.
